Why does an internet Identity require a yubikey?

Just a question on why these requirements to create an internet identity? i would suspect it harms adoption.

i for example would want to create one, but the inability to make one with ease just blocks my desire to create one, and will most likely prevent me from ever doing so.

is there any way i could just create one in a “normal” manner

Hey!

Quick answer. Most modern machines support WebAuthn. This means biometric or key based login. If your machine does not support these - it might be a good time to get a new machine.

V2 is coming out soon and will support email as well. (Gmail login).

yes, it’s annoying. i have to use one for my laptop and desktop, and internet identity doesn’t work on my smartphone at all. it is fun to use though, once you actually get one.

if he doesn’t want to buy a 20 dollar yubikey, i don’t think he’ll want to buy a whole new computer either.

Internet Identity does not require a YubiKey, but it’ll be happy to work with it if present. What it requires is passkeys support through WebAuth. For most of the users this means some biometrics authentication.

Passkeys offer a more secure and user-friendly alternative to passwords, mitigating risks like phishing attacks and simplifying the login process.

As @apotheosis mentioned, II 2.0 ships with an alternative way of creating an identity, namely sign in with a Google account.

Can you elaborate more on what your expectations are?

I am just recommending it - as it sounds like an older device. If there was any plans to update - sooner is always better to avoid hacks, malware, and such.

Then you get the extra benefit of WebAuthn support and likely other modern hardware amenities!
