AdSense like service in the Internet Computer?

@Severin, I would like to develope an AdSense like service for the Internet Computer and noticed that none of internet computer applications have web adds. Maybe this is due to some kind of IC platform restriction I should take into account when designing my ad service. Do you know whether there is any such restriction?

Hi, the Internet Computer does not impose restrictions on serving ads in general.

Why do you think most IC apps are not showing web adds (e.g. Google addsense)?

Do crypto folks like ads? And do they work in crypto apps? I could imagine that the adblock rate is way higher than in other populations

Do you think a IC-served addsense like service could be more attractive to the crypto community? it could emphasize user privacy, community governance, transparency (open source), and offering token rewards.

Earlier this year, Windoge98 launched the Dogvertiser. Perhaps they can share insights on what they learned about ads on the IC?

Regarding the original question, if it can be useful and note that I’m no expert in the field, I spontaneously see two catch based on my brief experience working at a startup in the media field that heavily relied on ads:

  • Speed is crucial. Web2 ad networks are the fastest. This is because there are many buyers, and ads need to be delivered as quickly as possible—almost before the content itself.
  • Targeted ads depend on data and ad buyers love those. While privacy and transparency are great for end users, buyers prefer knowing they have a high chance of selling sh**. The greater their chances, the more expensive the ad placement.

To add some historical perspective, one of the reasons ads have been the dominant B2C business model the last 20 years is because it has been difficult to charge users small amounts.

ICP and other blockchains now make micro payments possible. I hope we will see more services using that possibility, letting the user be the customer rather than the product.

IYO, besides micro-payments, adds could also play a role by reducing/subsidizing user micro-payment costs?
