Hi DFINITY team,
I’d like to follow up on the native ICP blob storage initiative, listed as Protium on the official roadmap.
This is an important capability for developers building open, user-sovereign software on ICP. While Cloud Engine and third-party object storage solutions can address storage costs, native blob storage would enable a different architecture: applications where users can own and control their data through canisters, without relying on an additional storage intermediary.
We’re working toward such a sovereign cloud experience, and I’d be interested in understanding where Protium currently stands and whether we could contribute to its development.
A few questions:
-
Current status: How far has Protium progressed? What has already been implemented, and what remains?
-
Maintainers: Who is currently responsible for the milestone, and whom could interested developers coordinate with?
-
Source code: Is there a public repository, development branch, or technical specification where we can follow the implementation?
-
Contributions: Are external contributions welcome? Could we help with implementation, testing, developer tooling, or documentation?
Even a brief update or a pointer to the relevant development work would be greatly appreciated.
I believe native, economically viable blob storage could become a foundational capability for the next generation of open software on ICP.
We’d be happy to contribute where useful.
Thanks to everyone working on this!
