There is currently a live proposal to send 3% of gross node provider rewards to sns dao neuron to stabilize the network. The 3% will be staked for 8 years non dissolving and the maturity will be used to fund opensource applications on the Ic.
I’ve made a variety of proposals similar to this over the years for ICDevs to bother the foundation and various SNSs, but they have generally been greeted with silence, disinterest, or apathy. We’ve asked for grants, to lease neurons, for pre allocations…we’ve had some generosity(particularly from the foundation) but the appetite for consistent, long-term, no-stings-attached, public goods funding is basically non existent.
A few other chains have public good/open source mechanisms built in and it helps a a forcing mechanism, but no one has really cracked it yet.
The one thing I’m convinced of is that the IC can only compete with other chains and web2 if we have the tools, infrastructure, and developer base to compete and that there are hundreds of man years of dev left to get there. None of that development is “profitable” and none of it will be funded by VCs and all of it will be poorly built over and over by every project until a concerted effort to fund a proper build exists.
I’m all for something like this but likely with a bit more transparency and pre consideration.
