In defense of Dom and the Dfinity team - There is a future for the Internet Computer

If it can be verified at such high speeds, wouldn’t it be possible to do general-purpose and parallel computing if the general-purpose computing is done with edge computing and the verification is done with ethereum, cosmos, or other blockchains? If this is the case, it seems to me that the strength of ICP, which can do general-purpose computation with wasm while being a blockchain, would be lost considerably.

The Prover is relatively expensive to run. Proving can work on the IC.
If you remember SpinnerCash, the prover in that case ran on the users’ browser with Circom.
Further demonstrating the point that ZKP can be ‘fast’ enough.

SNARK (Succint Arguments of Knowledge), the ‘succinct’ part here means easy to verify.
Verifiers and proofs are normally hosted on blockchain as that is the only place we can trust their execution. (IC, ETH, etc). The ETH case is very restrictive because only specific elliptic curves can be used in practice… also proof size is a bottle neck for storage.

“If this is the case, it seems to me that the strength of ICP, which can do general-purpose computation with wasm while being a blockchain, would be lost considerably.”

This depends on how you use the IC. Front ends, ckBTC, ckETH, http outcalls, etc cannot be emulated with this.

I think an ideal “zk”-rollup would run on the IC, with decentralized sequencers and provers running completely on-chain.

I also see the IC as an ideal place to run zkML models/weights/training.

Undoubtedly, ICP has excellent technology and cannot be compared with any other blockchain at the moment, and the Dfinity team is very experienced and flexible, one of the best blockchain teams.

The reason for all these criticisms is due to the large price drop, which makes small weaknesses highlighted by people

In crypto, price is more important than technology for retail investors

As the price of ICP increases, money and attention will flow to ICP
As the price increases, more users are attracted and more money is brought in

Maybe we need big whales outside of Dfinity to do massive pumps

I am hopeful about IC technology, although the ecosystem is so-so.

As a grant recipient, hackathon 2nd place winner and generally thinking person (with notable exceptions), I’d like to chime in on this one. I don’t have deep knowledge of other devs’ feelings, so this is totally anecdotal.

I have really enjoyed building on the IC. The grants team, communication and support has been consistent and positive. They are really structured about how they deliver grants, but also give a lot of creativity to the devs. Personally, I like to work to my own schedule, as I am more focused on the result that the deadlines, and they have always accommodated this. I made a VR canister framework, if anyone is interested.

When it comes to the ecosystem, I am positive about the things that work and sometimes frustrated by the things that don’t. I think that the tokenomics could be improved, but instead of talking about how Dfinity could change it, I am putting together my own concept that runs on top of ICP as a kind of crypto-commodity.

People love to criticise Dfinity, but are rarely prepared to take responsibility for creating something new. Decentralisation is about distributing the power, but people also need to take it. Some censorship will always exist, because some bad actors will always exist. Just my 2 sats.
