They may treat paying customers slightly differently but you’re right, it probably doesn’t matter that much.
It’s interesting because this thread is the entire reason for tech like ICP to even exist. This was the whole idea. “UNSTOPPABLE”, “UNCENSORED”, “DECENTRALIZED” internet for all, run by the people, for the people, the whole purpose of the DAO etc. I.e. The ultimate goal of creating this new system to begin with.
However, we have done a horrible job of convincing the public to come here (otherwise everyone would be using Taggr or Trax already for example) until they realize that the very few now control their online lives entirely and I can name a ton of sites that now regularly suspend, cancel, and demonetize people without any due process or recourse whatsoever and they get away with it not realizing the financial and other impacts they wield.
Even in crypto, COINBASE has treated me and many others like criminals just because a single ACH was rejected by a bank like JP Morgan Chase and not because the funds were not there. Despite giving them concrete proof, they suspended my account of more than 10 years indefinitely forcing me to have to eventually close it and despite appeals to the CFPB (government doesn’t care either and lets them get away with it). You are guilty. No judge. No jury. No recourse. All you can do is sue and they know most people don’t have the means to do so or it wouldn’t be worth it. They have such worldwide monopolies these days, they don’t care how many people they abuse.
This is part of the biggest reason to build on ICP vs. web2 and on big tech cloud systems without a doubt but we haven’t marketed this properly. Individuals might not care but governments do. Unless you want the US gov’t to have complete access to your data and be able to shut you down at their will, you simply cannot put it on any big tech web2 infrastructure.
This is the biggest selling point right now for ICP even if individuals don’t realize how important it is to have an internet available to them that is truly decentralized and free of any government control. Same with banking and Bitcoin obviously. If people only knew how much control the banks and the government have over their lives, they would never deposit a penny into any bank either.
Anyways, it’s maddening that these companies are getting away with this and that there isn’t an “internet bill of rights” for the entire world.
Every system people have designed has been corrupted by men who want to control everything and everyone. We should have known from the beginning of the internet this would happen.
