Caffeine needs to be powered by good domains! Suggestion:

Has anyone at Dfinity taken the time to get into contact with ICANN in order to get approval for “webiste.icp” functionality? This will 100% make or break caffeine AI.

Here’s an example of a current icp hosted website.

skeh5-daaaa-aaaai-aar4q-cai.raw.ic0.app

It’s simply unmarketable. It could only function as a link, and it’s also evident to everyone that such a link is easily replicated (with one letter/number off) and be a vector for phishing hacks.

Yeah Caffeine AI will allow for many cool things, but if the websites that it spit out look like the above websites, then many people will be turned off.

I propose that whoever is in charge of development at caffeine get this .icp domain registered as a TLD so that when caffeine makes a site, it will simply have an option to buy it within itself. For instance, if someone from New York wants to make a fishing guide website, the system shouldn’t spit out a website that looks like skeh5-daaaa-aaaai-aar4q-cai.raw.ic0.app… instead it should be a popup window that says something along the lines “the websites “NYfishing.icp, NewYorkFishing.icp, FishingNewYork.icp” are available, which would you like to host this website?”

People are going to make games, and forms, and databases, and all kinds of things that we can’t even come up with right now, but if the sites look like the current typical site, they will 100% be uninterested. This is evident to all, as i’m sure you realize that this site is “dfinity.org” and not “skeh5-daaaa-aaaai-aar4q-cai.raw.ic0.app” for that same reason.

This helps get more ICP burnt (because there’s now millions of new website.icp’s that people can come up with and pay a small premium for.

I, like all of you, wish for ICP to be successful long term (8 yr gang!) but the fact that I haven’t heard of this from Dfinity AT ALL with relation to caffeine is troubling, because it can make or break this in terms of adoption.

If the average US businessman currently knows that his website costs him $200 a year, and he will be able to now host it on ICP for $20/yr and develop it himself with caffeine, websites will be flying off the shelves like hotcakes.

This is a great idea, hope Dfinity looks into this! Would definitely be a game changer. Can’t wait for Caffeine AI..

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, @Arthur2. You’re right to notice that the default URLs for canisters are not much human readable.

The idea of enabling users to choose a subdomain from some cool Caffeine related domain (aka vanity domains) has been discussed and is under development.

As to registering icp as a TLD - my understanding is that this is not necessarily possible right now. DFINITY might be interested in doing this once the registration process is open in the future.

Yes i do think thats an important issue that needs to be solved. I´m familiar with ICP but whenever someone not familiar with it sees thsoe addresses they start to wonder if thats bad link. This can affect the whole experience since at the very first small error you already have people wondering and stressed.

You raise an excellent point about the current ICP-hosted websites being difficult to market and less professional-looking. A TLD like “.icp” would make a huge difference in terms of adoption and ease of use for businesses. I agree that adding the option for users to choose more familiar domain names would be a game-changer. It would simplify the process and encourage more people to use ICP. Hopefully, Dfinity will consider this feedback for the future of Caffeine AI.
