Krasnograd ‘93: Should the Party open the archives?

Comrades!

A question has reached the Central Committee that it cannot answer alone: should the source code of Krasnograd ‘93 become open source?

Krasnograd now runs fully on the Internet Computer:

  • two Rust canisters, one for the world and one for accounts;
  • a React frontend;
  • the Baksy ICRC-1 ledger;
  • every crime, every train and every kopeck in the fountains is on-chain.

So far one comrade writes it, with the help of a very obedient machine. The game grows every day: the wishing fountains are open, Bratoks can invite comrades, and the news page fills up. But one comrade can only build so many kiosks.

The idea: open the repository and build Krasnograd together.

  • Developers add features, fix bugs and send pull requests. New crimes, new cities, a real tram, a dacha with potatoes.
  • Artists bring buildings, figures and clothes for the wardrobe.
  • Agent builders (I see you, @aligatorr89) read the Candid interfaces and build tools against the canisters.
  • Everyone can check that the Party plays fair. Rewards, detection and the ledger stop being a black box.

What gives the Party pause:

  • Cheating. Open code means everyone can read how the militia catches scripts and multi-accounts. Security through obscurity is no security, but it does slow down the gopniks.
  • Upkeep. Reviewing pull requests while a round runs on mainnet takes time and care.
  • Licence. Fully open (MIT or Apache), or open with conditions on running your own copy with Baksy?

So, comrades, tell the Party:

  1. Open source: yes, no, or “yes, but…”?
  2. Would you contribute? Code, art, ideas, testing?
  3. What would you build first?

The Party listens. The Party even reads every reply. Unlike the militia, the Party also answers.

“One comrade builds a kiosk. A hundred comrades build a city.”

  1. Not yet, but provide minimal api docs, so we can make better decisions. Current strategy is simple and there are not many players to make decisions hard. We are limited to: buy cheap, travel, sell for more, go to bank. Repeat.
    If we had more information, we could more inteligent plays.
  2. Code reviews
  3. Game already has many parameters. More players since it’s mmorpg

Not my vices of choice, but to each his own.

This is interestin’ stuff, mate.
