WaterNeuron - What's next + SNS #2?

WaterNeuron DAO launched on July 3rd, 2024, and has rapidly emerged as a key player in ICP staking. In five months we reached 1.3M ICP staked in the protocol.

We propose to the community a summary of what WaterNeuron protocol has achieved since launch, a second SNS, and give grants to the contributors. The overarching goal is to decentralize further a protocol that has a larger voice in the NNS.

Summary WaterNeuron Protocol 5 months

At launch, WaterNeuron deployed open-sourced and audited code, committing to three core objectives:

  1. Allocate all raised ICP to an 8-year neuron.
  2. Reach $1M in ICP protocol stakes by the end of the year.
  3. Improve ICP liquidity in the DeFi ecosystem.

Allocate all raised ICP to an 8-year neuron

Over 90% of the funds have been transferred to the 8y neuron and the remaining should be done by the end of January.

Achieve $1M in ICP protocol stakes by year-end

We are at 1’334’558 ICP TVL. Currently, this puts us at $19M TVL.

The initial staking was funded by the treasury, as planned. This was followed by community members staking to participate in the airdrop. The third significant wave of stakers came from the DAO.

Here is a breakdown of ICP staked by the type of staker:

The boomerang canister, streamlines DAO staking by enabling single-proposal ICP stakes at waterneuron.fi/sns. Five DAOs have utilized this feature to stake 339,207 ICP total:

  1. @icvcofficial - nICP 293’639
  2. @OpenChat - nICP 34’687
  3. @DecideAI_- nICP 9’849
  4. @anvil_ic - nICP 1’032
  5. @icsneed - nICP ???

The number of stakers has been steadily increasing, although there has been a recent slowdown, which we believe is linked to ICP’s price fluctuations. For a deeper understanding of the protocol’s inner workings, you can explore the dashboard.

Enhance ICP DeFi Liquidity

WaterNeuron has 1.3M ICP on the protocol, controlling 2/3rd of ICP’s in DeFi.

The protocol has enabled stakers to earn yield since launch driven by the update of the protocol exchange rate. We currently sit at 0,96292041 nICP per ICP.

nICP Token

The majority of our trading volume comes from ICPSwap, which has been our primary source since July, generating over $3M in volume and attracting 800+ holders. The ICP/nICP pair is the most active, offering an average APY of 5% in its liquidity pool.

Additionally, the growing adoption of borrowing and lending platforms like Lendfinity and dFinance on ICP and Bitfinity networks is expected to further enhance the utility of the nICP token.

Governance

WaterNeuron is among the most active DAOs in crypto.

Since the establishment of the WaterNeuron known neuron, no proposals have been missed, as confirmed by vpgeek stats. Through the active engagement of CodeGov, we have successfully persuaded major Whales to follow the WaterNeuron known neuron. This has provided the DAO with a 2% voting power.

WTN tokens are distributed as follow:

All the following points are suggestions to improve decentralization

SNS #2

As originally planned, we now enter the second era of the protocol, Papaya Era. Where 20% of the supply will be distributed in a new SNS, representing 23 295 621 WTN. The ICP community has grown since July, and we want new community members to be able to engage in the WaterNeuron community, while further decentralizing WTN holders.

Given the SNS framework does not allow for additional ones we suggest using our own canister: feat(sns-module): sns2 by leo-ship-it · Pull Request #54 · WaterNeuron/WaterNeuron · GitHub.

Unfortunately, the SNS framework has rigid rules on how many tokens can be withdrawn every week, hence the participants of this round will receive tokens over the subsequent months. All ICP raised through decentralized means will be deposited into an 8-year neuron. This strategy aims to enhance the APY, ensuring long-term competitiveness for the ecosystem.

Grants for contributors

We propose distributing additional WTN tokens to individuals who have significantly contributed to the DAO’s growth and development. The allocation is as follows:

  • 300k WTN: Awarded to Wenzel, Alex Lorimer, and Bjorn T. for their efforts in voting on and reviewing SNS proposals.
  • 300k WTN: Awarded to Jack Johnson, Saratoshi, and Mico for their contributions to education and community engagement on Twitter and Telegram.
  • 300k WTN: Awarded to Jerry Banfield, CoinNation, ZeroToHero, Aaron Bremser, and Blockchain Pill for creating content that supports and promotes the WaterNeuron ecosystem.

All distributed tokens will be locked for a period of three years.

Additionally, to support the continued development and security of the protocol, Sisyphe will receive 11M WTN tokens, which will also be provably locked for three years.

As previously stated, these tokens will only be distributed after the tokens of the SNS #2.

Suggested Governance Parameters Update

  • Reward Rate: Maintain at 3% annually from .24%.
  • Maximum Age Bonus: Set to 100%, encouraging long-term staking from 25%.
  • Maximum Dissolve Delay Bonus: Set to 100%, promoting extended commitment from 50%.

We recommend implementing this update to incentivize participation and align with long-term network growth goals.

Thank you all for taking the time to read this update! Your feedback is invaluable, so please don’t hesitate to share your thoughts or suggestions. We look forward to hearing from you!

I’m really happy to see that WaterNeuron will enter the second phase (Papaya Era) as originally planned. This is great news for decentralization for WaterNeuron and the NNS. This shows amazing leadership by the WaterNeuron team.

Since this is a new decentralization sale, I want to offer some options to the WTN community on known neurons that you can follow. Below are neuron IDs and configuration details for all known public neurons in the WTN SNS along with their descriptions as posted on their website or in the announcement in the WaterNeuron community on OpenChat. If there is anyone else that wants to make themselves known as a credible and dedicated Followee option for the WTN SNS, then please let me know and I will add you to the list. You are also welcome to post your information in the same thread linked above on OpenChat.

Based on the configuration described below, the CodeGov WTN neuron votes on all WTN proposals. The CodeGov WTN neuron Followees are intentionally and actively managed on every proposal topic in order to ensure the CodeGov WTN neuron casts educated votes on every proposal submitted to the WTN SNS. Our goal is to advance decentralization of the WaterNeuron SNS by providing a valid and credible choice as a Followee option. CodeGov reserves the right to change Followee selections on any proposal topic at any time according to what we believe is the best configuration of our neuron.

Topic 1: Motion
Topic 2: Manage nervous system parameters
Topic 9: Transfer SNS Treasury Funds (this is considered a critical proposal topic)

Saratoshi is a long-time ICP community member and investor with a deep interest in ICP and its ecosystem governance. He actively participates in community discussions and proposals, contributing to the decentralized development of the Internet Computer.

The folks above are committed to always voting on some of the most important proposal topics for the WaterNeuron community to have an independent voice. Hence, the CodeGov WTN neuron is an available choice for anyone in the WaterNeuron DAO who wants to make sure that voting power in the SNS is as decentralized as possible. We don’t claim to be the only choice, nor do we want to be the only choice, but we are reliable and we are committed to advancing decentralization within the WaterNeuron SNS. These Followees are unpaid, yet are committed to performing due diligence when casting their votes on these topics. They are all asked to vote on each proposal with their own convictions.

Topic 0: All non-critical topics
Followees:
WTN Team - Leo, Enzo, Ulysse Kaz
The CodeGov WTN neuron follows the WTN team neuron at this time because there is no funding available to hire our own reviewers who can perform technical reviews of WTN proposals. However, in the event that funding does become available some day, then CodeGov will hire reviewers to perform this work and the CodeGov WTN neuron will be configured to follow them. Hence, if you follow the CodeGov WTN neuron on this topic then you will automatically follow the dedicated reviewers that we hire to provide technical verification of proposals and an independent vote in the future.

Topic 1000: Vote for NNS Proposals
CodeGov NNS neuron (vote relay canister)
WaterNeuron generates attractive returns for staking nICP because of the large 8 year and 6 month neurons that it owns and controls. It participates in NNS governance by voting with the WaterNeuron NNS known neuron. A canister is used to cast votes for these neurons based on the results of the Vote for NNS Proposals topic. This topic is a WTN replicate of each NNS proposal and is voted by the entire WTN SNS. The CodeGov team developed a canister that can relay votes between NNS neurons and WTN neurons. Anyone can use this canister to set up their own vote relay (instructions provided on our codegov-wtn-vote-relay repository on GitHub), but it is also set up between the CodeGov NNS known neuron and the CodeGov WTN neuron since we already vote on all NNS proposal topics including all technical topics.

NOTE: The configuration of the neuron can be verified using the get_neuron query available on the dashboard. Follow the link, check the neuron ID box, enter the neuron ID, and click Call. The Candid result displays all neuron configuration properties including permission types for each principal and all Followees for each proposal topic.

D-QUORUM channel

The members of D-QUORUM are appointable exclusively by WTN proposal, providing followers a verifiably decentralized voting quorum.

Dashboard Link

Exclusive control can be verified via the WTN Governance Canister, revealing that D-QUORUM is controlled directly by the WTN Governance Canister (and this principal only). It is impossible to add or remove principals or permissions, making the neuron resilient to governance attacks, yet flexible (allowing for council members to be added/removed as followees over time via proposal). DAO proposals are the only possible way of configuring D-QUORUM followees (which then represent elected council members for each topic).

The initial followee configuration is the WTN Team for every topic. This can be updated if/when the WTN DAO decide to reconfigure D-QUORUM followees, and if/when the manage_SNS_controlled_neuron proposal type has been implemented by DFINITY.

Subnet Management is another topic that I review, in addition to actively building tools and processes to facilitate more effective governance.

I provide evidence of my due diligence on the DFINITY forum for proposals that I have reviewed. In all other cases, I wait for the outcome of each proposal to be decided before following the prevailing vote (to avoid influencing the outcome when I haven’t personally had a chance to perform sufficient due diligence). I reject proposals that I consider to be inaccurate, misleading, and/or not in the best interests of the Internet Computer and the community that it serves.

I will say I was originally against the sale but thanks to the teams explanation of why they changed their minds I can at least understand the push to have it.

Will the 300k grants and the 11m dev tokens be taken from the sns sale amount?

I also think we should open up the conversation to use the icp raised in different ways to help boost the growth of nicp and wtn.

A lot of users bring up “liquidity issues” on secondary markets so it might be good to communicate with defi projects like Kong, NTN, etc… to see what options are available to the dao to help the overall growth and adoption of nicp in these defi projects.

I will start off the topic with a suggestion.

We could use defivectors from NTN to set buy orders of Nicp and then either unstake the gained nicp to add to the 8 year neuron while holding the left over nicp to use for further investments and or provide liquidity.

I won’t agree with this, also wonder what the other +500 current members of the DAO(those that haven’t been bought with grants) think of this nonsense…
Get rid of the HUGE unjustified grants and release the WTN airdrop for every nICP minter sooner at least….

Are you seriously suggesting the DAO itself digging the graves on its nICP minters by depleting the ICP reward pool ? That doesn’t sound good to me…just asking!

@Oaye Why did you create a new account to engage in this discussion on the forum? What’s wrong with using your normal identity that everyone already knows?

felt the need to spill this here 1st…You’re misstaking me…I don’t fud for joy! just want to hear opinions of other members other than the grants recipients…Hope I don’t ask for much!!

This is great news for the ecosystem! I’m very pleased to see the original plan on track, for more governance power to be distributed to the community.

I’m also very glad to see the names of numerous positive influences in both the WTN DAO and the ecosystem as a whole

Growing the 8yr neuron further will benefit all nICP holders, and make the WaterNeuron protocol even more effective than it already is :rocket:

I’m looking forward to more increadible protocol growth, vigerous DAO debates, and diligent SNS + NNS voting :raised_hands:

Yup, the DAO has concurred, with all its 12 members, mico was one of the biggest advocate against another SNS, looks like 100k tokens did the job, probably 100xing his current bags…
This is starting to look like a kids DAO with the latest actions taken, not just this one, I hope you guys come back into your senses asap if you want to be taken serious…
Am I going crazy ? Close to 1% of total supply for 10 people to further decentralize the project or putting the loudest voices to safety before the upcoming massive token dilution ??

Guys this is my last msg here, I’m just witnessing my money flying out the window and it hurts, hope you understand and don’t judge to harsh…keep doing your thang and I’ll just act in accordance silently…:v:

I disagree.

The TVL is still only 1.3M.

The yield on $WTN will deteriorate further from 2.2%.

Why are you rushing into this? I feel a sense of distrust.

I’m confused about how much each grant awardee receives. The first two groups allocate 300k WTN for three people. Does that mean each gets 100k WTN each?

The last group is also allocated 300k WTN, but there are 5 people listed. Do they get 60k WTN each?

Yes, I believe that is what it means. I also think this question was asked by Mico yesterday in the Telegram group and was answered by Enzo, so you could probably confirm with a quick search.

Would it be possible to nominate more people who have engaged in the WaterNeuron TG and OC discussions, and proposal reviews? There are members who have diligently reviewed proposals, double checked addresses, etc. And there are people who have regularly contributed to debates and helped battle test ideas. By rewarding them we also encourage others to engage and participate. I would suggest smaller rewards in the range of 1k - 5k WTN.

This will also increase WTN decentralization.

Another idea might be to send out a small one-time WTN reward to max-staked voting neurons. It would really help to make people feel included and appreciated. It’s great to reward top performers, but since decentralization is a top priority for WaterNeuron I think we should be rewarding more broadly.

That’s fine, it’s good to get this in the forum though. And I think it would be helpful to write these out in the proposal just to avoid confusion.

Apparently wtn needs to hire a marketing team.
The dao doesn’t need to be handing out free wtn for what people did for free. The whole dao invested in wtn, it only makes sense they would help out their own investment.

Just hire a marketing manager instead of this grant. You can do way more with that $, instead of paying a small hand selected group a large amount.
So much more you can do for the dao than give A big hand out…

I support the sns sale but don’t think they should be in the same proposal.

This is interesting, are you able to share some more info about the sale dynamics (will it be the same as conventional SNS sales)? I see from the motion proposal that there will be a weekly sale cap, and the sale will last over the course of 9 weeks. Can I ask how the ICP / WTN exchange rate will be determined during the sale over the course of those weeks? Will hitting the weekly cap influence the exchange rate for the next week?

Thanks
