Upcoming Tunebook SNS Decentralization Sale

Hello everyone!

We are excited to share our proposal for the creation of a Service Nervous System (SNS) DAO for Tunebook. This forum post is an opportunity for you to learn more about Tunebook, our vision, and how we’re building a decentralized platform for Trad music. We welcome your thoughts and questions as we embark on this journey to empower the global Trad music community.

About Tunebook

Tunebook is a decentralized platform designed for Traditional (Trad) musicians, built on the Internet Computer Protocol (ICP). Our mission is to preserve the cultural heritage of Trad music, connect musicians, and provide a digital hub for sharing, discovering, and trading within the community.

The platform offers several features, including:

  • Repertoire Sharing: Musicians can upload and share their repertoires, compare tune lists, and explore new music, enabling deeper connections and collaboration.
  • Decentralized Permanence: Leveraging ICP’s blockchain capabilities, all uploaded tunes, transcriptions, and recordings are preserved indefinitely, ensuring cultural preservation.
  • Marketplace for Instruments: A trusted space for buying and selling rare and bespoke Trad instruments.
  • Decentralized Governance via DAO: The community of musicians will govern the platform, with stakeholders deciding on the future direction through the Tunebook DAO.

Our mission is to make sure the vibrant tradition of Trad music continues to thrive for generations to come by providing musicians with the tools to connect, share, and preserve their cultural heritage. We see Trad music as an inherently social and communal art form, and we aim to enhance these qualities with the unique benefits of blockchain technology.

For a more detailed overview, you can find our Whitepaper here.

Tokenomics

The total supply of TUNE tokens will be 10 million. The proposed initial distribution is as follows:

  • 25%: Reserved for the SNS treasury (2,500,000 TUNE tokens).
  • 30%: Public sale (3,000,000 TUNE tokens).
  • 30%: Team allocation (3,000,000 TUNE tokens).
  • 9%: Airdrops for early adopters and contributors (900,000 TUNE tokens).
  • 6%: DEX liquidity (600,000 TUNE tokens).

The treasury will be controlled by the DAO and used to fund ongoing development, community initiatives, and operational expenses based on proposals from the community.

Please see our Tokenomics spreadsheet.

Decentralization SNS Swap

We propose to distribute 30% of the total supply of TUNE tokens via an SNS decentralization swap. This will be open to anyone outside the United States and aims to distribute governance to as many community members as possible.

Swap Details:

  • Min participation: 1 ICP
  • Max participation: 10,000 ICP
  • Max to be raised: 70,000 ICP
  • Min to be raised: 7,000 ICP
  • Min participants: 100

You can participate via the NNS front end or the command line using quill.

See our SNS configuration here.

Use of Funds

The funds raised will be used to:

  • Maintain the application: Fund cycles to power Tunebook on the Internet Computer.
  • Further development: Complete the marketplace and enhance platform features.
  • Community building: Grow our user base, incentivize participation through airdrops, and develop educational resources to guide musicians through using blockchain features.

Hey, my name is Barry, I founded CANI which is an ecosystem of dApps and services on the IC. The aim is to empower content creators by revolutionising rights and financial independence. I’m up to discuss some collaborations with CANI. I am reading a few synergies here, happy to jump on a call when you are ready. Check us out when you have some time.

Hello Rob and Gurleen and the @Tunebook team,

  1. What stage is the product at? Do you have users? Specifically, I am asking because I am curious where the planned airdrop (nine percent of the tokens) will go to?

  2. When do you plan to make your proposal?

Hi there,

The core functionality of the app is live, and I’ve assembled a group of local musicians who are testing it with me. This will allow us to gather valuable feedback and make improvements based on real user experiences.

We haven’t finalized the specifics of the airdrop yet, but the goal is to reward early adopters of the platform. My initial idea is to tie rewards to specific milestones, such as:

  • Create a profile: Earn some tokens.
  • Add 100 tunes to your tunebook: Earn more tokens.
  • Make 10 friends, add a session, etc.: Unlock additional rewards.

However, we need a strategy to prevent airdrop farming. I want the tokens to go to genuine players who will use and value the platform. One idea is to implement a referral system, where only users with a referral code are eligible. That said, I’m concerned about excluding musicians who might discover the site organically, as they are exactly the type of people I want to have ownership in the platform.

I was wondering if DecideAI could assist with this, though I’m not sure if they can provide proof of Celtic musicianship.

I’d love to hear any suggestions or ideas you might have!

Since our target audience isn’t crypto-native, I’ve been careful about avoiding terms like “airdrop” in communications. Instead, I’m presenting this as an opportunity to own a stake of the community governed platform, and have a voice in its future development. I am emphasizing the community aspect—encouraging users to think of it as influence within a group they care about, rather than “free money.”

Another idea I’m exploring is reaching out to prominent figures in the traditional music scene (who would most certainly cringe at being called “influencers”) to join Tunebook and build out their repertoires in exchange for slightly more substantial token grants. This would not only attract intermediate players eager to explore these influencers’ repertoires, but also help build credibility and adoption. I’m also considering similar offers to instrument makers and dealers to bootstrap the marketplace. Since these are more along the lines of a marketing initiative than an airdrop, it would be funded through the treasury. The 9% allocation, however, is strictly reserved for general app users.

We’re aiming to finalize the proposal in the next week or so.

Hello @Tunebook,

You may want to consider developing a points system before you announce any airdrop. It will help you analyze how people interact with the platform without knowing how you will distribute the airdrop while also tracking interactions that will help you inform how many tokens you will drop.

I think that it’s quite easy to game the system with the milestones that you outlined.

Cool project!

I take it this is US centric or am I misreading? (edit: Duuuuh, I misread! Nevermind me))

There is traditional music all over the world, and a lot of it is at risk of disappearing…

This would be an awesome thing if done right…

I could vote for a project like this. Preserving ethnic heritage through food, music, and history is of utmost importance, especially in the United States, where cultural identity is often reduced to simplistic voting blocks like white, black, Jewish, and many others on the Census. This effectively erases thousands of distinct cultures. Honestly, these categories should be eliminated for government documents entirely; they only serve to make us susceptible to political manipulation. My rants always have a point, I promise! Lol

So, I’m thinking the Trinity knot in the ICP colors might cause an issue, since it’s the Trinity, right? And when you say ‘Trad,’ are you talking about Traditionalist Catholicism, Irish traditional music, Celtic music, or a mix of all six Celtic traditions? I know this might sound super small, but people who love to complain, especially about something like a rainbow-colored Trinity knot, will definitely stir up trouble for you. Pro-complainers don’t care what something represents, it’s all about what it means to them.

Interesting project, combining old with the new.

Staking and Incentives

Users can stake $TUNE tokens in neurons, locking them for a specified period to gain voting power and access to premium features. Staking reflects a long-term commitment to Tunebook’s success while aligning incentives for both the community and the platform.

Is there any ROI for stakers besides voting and premium features? How will I benefit from holding/staking your token?
Will i be giving royalties on sales?

Sustainability and Growth

The $TUNE tokenomics model is designed to ensure the platform’s financial sustainability while fostering community growth. By distributing governance and incentivizing active participation, Tunebook creates a vibrant ecosystem where Trad musicians can connect, collaborate, and preserve their cultural heritage. With a solid economic model and governance structure in place, Tunebook is making notable progress toward its mission.

So what is the business model? What percentage/royalties is the DAO taking on different sales on your website or is there another revenue stream that is not mentioned in the white paper?
I only see “use of funds” but don’t really see how funds are gonna come into the DAO.

Good luck on your SNS launch!

When we say “Trad,” we’re specifically referring to Celtic traditional music—whether it’s Irish, Scottish, Shetland, Swedish, Old Time, or beyond. Our aim was to be inclusive, as we might expand Tunebook to other groups of musicians in the future based on interest.

The Trinity Knot actually predates Christianity by centuries and has held various meanings across cultures throughout history. We thought incorporating Dfinity’s colors into it would create a recognizable symbol within the ICP community while honoring its roots. But you bring up a valid point about how different interpretations can spark debate, and we’ll definitely consider how best to present it moving forward.

Again, thank you for your thoughtful suggestions and for sharing your perspective—it’s always better to catch potential issues early, as your spinach analogy so perfectly illustrates!

Thank you for your thoughtful questions and for your interest in Tunebook!

Staking and Incentives Yes, there will be voting rewards for stakers of the TUNE tokens. In addition to governance and premium features, voting rewards will be distributed to those who actively participate in governance by staking their tokens.

The core value of holding and staking TUNE tokens lies in the access to critical features of Tunebook that will require tokens to be locked up. This includes features like our instrument marketplace. For example, a musician looking to sell an instrument occasionally may need to lock up a smaller amount of tokens, whereas a professional dealer making frequent sales would need to stake a larger amount. This approach creates scarcity for the token, which we believe will help maintain its value as demand grows.

Revenue Model and Sustainability You bring up an excellent point regarding the business model and revenue streams. We plan for the DAO to derive revenue by taking a small percentage of every sale that occurs on the platform—whether it’s the sale of a bespoke instrument or a tune NFT. However, implementing this model in a way that is user-friendly for our target audience presents some challenges.

Many Trad musicians are unfamiliar with crypto, and introducing crypto payments too early might alienate users. For now, payments on the platform will likely be in fiat currency to maintain accessibility for our community. To enable a percentage of these sales to flow into the treasury, the ideal scenario would be to leverage a payment gateway on the ICP that allows users to pay with credit/debit cards, while seamlessly converting those funds to crypto on the back end. This would allow us to incorporate royalties to the treasury without forcing users to handle cryptocurrencies directly.

We believe it’s only a matter of time before a service like this is developed on the Internet Computer, and we are keeping an eye out for solutions that align with this vision. Meanwhile, the immediate value will come from staking requirements for using the marketplace, which helps take tokens out of circulation and provides stability for the token’s value.

Sustainability and Growth The economic model is centered on long-term community engagement, and we’re committed to iterating and refining it based on feedback and advancements in the ecosystem. For now, funds generated by token staking and treasury disbursements will support the growth and development of the platform, and eventually, we aim to generate direct revenue through on-platform sales that will feed into the DAO treasury.

Thanks again for the well wishes and insightful questions. The SNS launch is an exciting step, and we’re thrilled to be taking this journey with the support of the community.

Thanks for the reply!

While the project is indeed more aimed at active trad music users there is not much for investors at this moment besides the voting/staking rewards.

Fiat onramping is still a painfully slow process in crypto, i do hope as well more projects are working/building towards better Fiat adoption/swapping tools.
Even Binance is offloading this through paymonade for some countries, i wish there was an ICP wallet trying to incorporate something like that. Would be easy to add that wallet to your site…

I’ve only just come across this project now as I was thumbing through open proposals. I’ve read the announcement and am not clear on what the problem statement is. The primary mission statement / USP appears to be

I’m not convinced by how this project aims to do that. This can’t be done without a convincing revenue stream (and a broader target market). I’m afraid I don’t see a convincing revenue stream, although I like the intentions of the project. :slightly_smiling_face:

ICP is a very cost effective crypto network, but there will be a perpetual cost to storing these artefacts on the blockchain. The above promise is not one that cannot be sensibly made and reliably kept.

I’ve decided to reject the SNS proposal because I don’t see a sensible roadmap, and claims such as the one above are unsupported. I certainly don’t see why the project should be made an SNS (at least at this stage).

Just to be clear, the two main sources of revenue are:

  • NFT Tunes - Each time a user mints their composition as an NFT, and sells it to other users, the Tunebook platform takes a fee.
  • Instrument Sale - The platform takes a percentage of each sale.

Tunebook is a community platform designed to empower traditional musicians. Users can explore, create, and trade tunes, buy and sell instruments, engage in discussions about tunes and sessions in the forums, and even promote their pubs as session venues. A key innovation is providing composers with a way to profit from their work, addressing a long-standing gap in the Trad music world.

The main challenge we’re tackling is the lack of a dedicated social network for traditional musicians—a space where you can connect with someone you met at a session, compare repertoires, and discover other sessions they participate in. While the data preservation capabilities of ICP are incredibly appealing, especially given the fragility of web1-hosted data, this is more of an exciting bonus than the primary problem we aim to solve.

[Writing this on behalf of DFINITY]:

Thank you for sharing the proposal for Tunebook.

At this time, DFINITY will reject the proposal for the following reasons:

  1. The SNS is not completely decentralized at genesis. The developer team has the majority of the voting power.
  2. The project code appears to be at an early stage.

We appreciate your interest and hope you all well in your journey with Tunebook. We hope that you continue to onboard more musicians to the dapp and build it out based on their feedback.
