You’ve probably heard about MCP by now. If not, it’s become the standard way of connecting tools and data to your AI agents. You can use it in all major chat bots and agent platforms including ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf, n8n, Gemini CLI, and pretty much any other platform you can think of.
Recently, Coinbase released their solution for agent payments, called x402, which Google built upon and integrated into their A2A spec. Additionally, OpenAI released their SDK for integrating Shopify storefronts into their ChatGPT product. These are important indicators of a foreseen demand for payment rails built for AI agents.
The ICP is uniquely positioned as it’s currently the only blockchain that can host MCP servers natively and without any bridges. MCP servers use JSON-RPC served over HTTP which means its possible to turn any canister into an MCP server. The Internet Computer is the ONLY place where you can create an app (mcp server) that your AI agent can use to manage its portfolio including BTC, ETH, USDC, etc. (thanks ChainFusion). Right now we’re the only blockchain that natively offers wallets designed specifically for AI agents.
This ability to give you AI agents access to DeFi is an enormous advantage over Google’s standard (shopping card with stripe checkout), and Coinbase’s x402 (requires all MCP clients to use an additional wrapper whereas our solution is completely compliant with the spec and ANY MCP clients).
I’m confident that we have something valuable here that cannot be done anywhere else atm, and I’m also confident that AI agents will become a primary user base for on-chain services, and they will need a native, decentralized financial backend to operate.
