Proposal: Update Interim Gen-1 Node Provider Remuneration After 48 months

[NNS Proposal] Zero Rewards for Obsolete Node Types (type0, type1, type2)

TL;DR

We propose setting the monthly node reward for the fully deprecated node types—type0, type1, and type2—to 0 XDR. This step follows the ongoing evolution of the Internet Computer’s node remuneration model and removes the possibility of old rewards being distributed to obsolete node configurations.

Background

  • The Internet Computer node reward model has evolved over time, most recently incorporating updates to Gen-1 node provider remuneration after the initial 48-month period.
  • Forum discussions (e.g., forum thread) and previously adopted proposals (#125549, #127044, #132553, #133145) resulted in agreements to reduce the type1.1 reward amounts by 33% compared to the original type1 rewards.
  • Gen-1 nodes operating under the updated scheme can still receive rewards under the new type1.1
  • The deprecated node types type0, type1, and type2 are considered fully obsolete.

Proposal Overview

  1. Zero Remuneration
Set the reward for node types type0, type1, and type2 to 0 XDR/month within the node_rewards_table in the NNS registry.

  2. Justification

    • Obsolescence: The above reward types are no longer active.
    • Operations: Rather than requiring multiple proposals to change each affected node operator record, a single NNS proposal can eliminate all obsolete rewards directly in the reward table.
    • Room for Errors: This change in the table eliminates the risk that any obsolete node operator continues to receive the old rewards during the next reward cycle.
