It appears that one cannot query the list of canisters controlled by their own principal

I was surprised to discover that there currently seems to be no way to query the list of canisters controlled by the principal I own.

If you forget the canister ID, there is no way to recover it.

Is there any way to query the list of canisters currently controlled by the principal through an interface?

Or is it only possible through manual recording?

Oh, this is fantastic! Using the /api/v3/canisters API in Swagger makes querying completely possible.
