I’m experiencing an issue logging into Internet Identity (identity.ic0.app) on my Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra using Google Chrome. The login was working fine earlier today, but now every time I try to authenticate, I get an “Operation Canceled” error.
Details of the Issue:
Device: Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra
Browser: Google Chrome (latest version)
Issue: After entering my Internet Identity, I get a prompt to authenticate, but it fails with an error message:
“The interaction with your security device was canceled or timed out. Please try again.”
Troubleshooting Steps I’ve Tried: Restarted the phone Disabled pop-up blocker Cleared cache and cookies in Chrome Tried logging in with Incognito Mode Disabled Samsung Pass and Secure Folder Checked for system and browser updates (everything is up to date) Verified that Internet Identity works on other devices (laptop, other phones) Tested on other browsers (Brave, Samsung Internet, Edge) on the same phone, but they all fail
Additional Notes:
Other devices work fine. I can log in using my laptop and another phone.
The issue is specific to this device. Every browser on the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra fails.
It was working earlier today. Nothing significant was changed on my end before the issue started.
Has anyone else experienced this? Could this be a Samsung-specific WebAuthn issue? Any help would be appreciated.
What exactly do you see before the “Operation Canceled” error? Is it a QR code that then you cancel? Do you see options to choose to get the passkey? Or so you see another message?
Do you use a password manager with this phone? When you log in with another device, is the passkey of this phone still there? Do you sync your passkeys? Do you use Google Password Manager?
That all the other browsers fail in this device it seems that somehow the device lost access to the passkey that you registered in Internet Identity.
Another test, could you try registering and then “logging in” again: https://webauthn.io/ . To confirm that the problem is with II and not with your device.
Before the message is displayed, the Internet Identity Number is there, nothing else. I simply click on the Internet Identity Number and then nothing else happens besides that error. The fingerprint prompt does not pop up at all. I use Samsung Pass and Google Password with this device and always have. This only became a problem when I reported it.
It actually works now with Samsung Internet Browser, but every other browser I get the same error.
I haven’t seen not even getting the fingerprint prompt nor QR code or anything. The error you see is shown only when the prompt is cancelled. It’s weird that the browser is using this error when you haven’t cancelled anything. But with webauthn implementations in the browsers and OSes I have seen everything.
I never managed to make it work with Chrome or Brave Browser. That is the error I get with both when I try to log in using WebAuthn. At this point, I have given up using these two other browsers for ICP related stuff. It sucks, but it’s manageable.
I believe I helped another user who had the same problem and had the same solution. He was also using a Samsung and only the Samsung browser was working.
I recommend you try again after software updates on the Android OS.
