Custom Domains feature evaluation: users feedback

Custom Domains feature on the ICP has been running for almost two years now. Over a thousand domains have been registered so far. For example: internetcomputer.org, oc.app, dfinity.org are some examples of Web3 applications hosted on the ICP using custom domains. If you’ve never used Custom Domains before, it is very easy to start.

Boundary Nodes team is eager to gather your feedback on: setup, operation, troubleshooting, and support of the feature. Our goal is to identify friction points and improve the overall user experience.

Please take a moment to fill out a short 5-minute survey till April 16th. To show our appreciation, we’re offering a chance to receive cycles equivalent to 1 ICP, which will be used to top up canisters associated with your custom domain.

I’m a big fan of the custom domains feature…but…

I know times are tough, but surely the team can afford at least a few ICP

I filled the survey but I will provide my comment here for visibility.

I personally did not have issues setting up custom domain. I use dfx and WSL, vscode, environment to do my development and set up my sites. I use Cloudfare as my domain registrar / DNS provider.

For users who are using IDEs, I believe it would be beneficial if there was a web form application where users could log in with Internet Identity, be given instructions to add the generated principal as a controller of the canister, and then submit the canister ID, and domain name in the webform to do the request for them, as many newer developers and creators may not be comfortable yet using command line tools. Maybe this form could be added to the canister page in the nns, and then the user would be able to create, canisters, top up canisters, and request custom domain connection, all in the nns canister UI.

one ICP will run a small static site that doesn’t get a ton of traffic for years. (even at these prices) I think that’s fair.

I agree adding it to the canister page in the nns

Recordss AI - Domain Management Orchestrator

Introduction

Hello Nikolay, looks like the timing its perfect

I’m currently developing an orchestrator that simplifies domain name management (purchase, configuration, registration) and security (Web2 / Web3).

This project is part of the ICP/AI hackathon, running until April 6th at 11:59 PM.

Current Progress

:white_check_mark: The MVP and API are fully functional, though some configurations are still required as we are in the early stages (this project have2 weeks).
:white_check_mark: The platform enables users to manage domain names more efficiently while ensuring security compliance.
(no more need to search over docs of server host /registrar to configure your DNS)

Future Development

:small_blue_diamond: Integration of a Large Language Model (LLM):

  • The LLM will be powered by our API data to create an automatic agent (browser-based).

  • Key technical challenges include managing authorizations before executing actions.

Try It Out

You can check out the orchestrator here:

Stay Tuned

Im continuously improving the platform so stay tuned ! :rocket: CHEERS !

Just a few thoughts on the topic of trust and verifiability :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi everyone,

Thank you all for taking the time to participate in the survey about the Custom Domains feature. We truly appreciate your input and thoughtful suggestions.

You’ve highlighted several valuable areas for improvement, including:

  • Introducing a UI to simplify the domain registration process
  • Providing an easy way to manage all registered domains for a user (also via UI)
  • Create a tutorial video to guide users through the setup

At the moment, the main pain points appear to be:

  • Setting up a top-level domain (the Apex record)
  • Configuring the .well-known/ic-domains file within a canister
  • Providing notifications when custom domain is registered

We will review all your feedback in more detail and use it to improve custom domains for you. We will keep you posted.

As promised we’ve topped up the canisters of all survey participants with 1 ICP. If you haven’t received the cycles, please reach out to us.
