Can the canister recognize “update call” is from a frontend canister?

an update method should be able to tell if it is being called by a canister, a frontend/user, the anonymous user or a derived id (but I haven’t tried this).

How future-proof is this?

It seems like the ability to differentiate between user and canister is supposed to go away in the future.

No. That happens to be the case now, but that’s, IMHO, incidental. Imagine we’d start to use “self-authenticating ids” for canisters to allow canister developers know their canister id before deploying (and using a cryptographic signature on canister creation to prove that they are in possession of that self-authenticating id).
